Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function
Tuned to safety.
Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function warns the driver in the event of an imminent collision and brakes the vehicle autonomously in an emergency. The sensitivity of Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function can be adjusted to one of three levels.
Thanks to the cross-traffic function, the system helps to prevent not only collisions with vehicles driving ahead, but also vehicles or passengers approaching the vehicle from the side. The “end-of-traffic-jam” emergency braking function serves to brake the vehicle when an obstacle cannot be evaded and thus helps to prevent accidents or minimise the consequences of an accident.
Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function is part of the driving assistance package from Mercedes-Benz. It uses innovative technology to prevent hazardous situations, avoid accidents and promote a comfortable and safe driving experience.
The driving assistance system is equipped with a stereo camera behind the windscreen near the rear-view mirror and a radar sensor behind the radiator grille. In this way, the distance warning and collision warning functions of Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function are combined to provide braking assistance or even autonomous braking according to the specific driving situation.
The cross-traffic function is implemented by detecting crossing vehicles by means of the stereo multipurpose camera and long-range radar. Provided the crossing traffic is detected in good time, the driver is warned of the situation and is provided with braking support in the event of an emergency braking action. If the driver fails to react, Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function initiates an autonomous emergency braking action. The vehicle speed is reduced significantly which means that collisions with the vehicle in front can be avoided when relative speeds are low.
From 30 km/h upward, the system is able to provide a visual warning if the distance to the vehicle in front is too small. From 7 km/h upward, the system provides an acoustic warning if the distance is decreasing so rapidly that there is a risk of collision.
If the driver reacts by depressing the brake pedal during
this time, braking support will be initiated automatically in accordance with the driving situation. In an emergency, the vehicle will carry out maximum full-stop braking. At the same time, ABS will prevent the wheels from locking.
If the pressure on the brake pedal is released and the hazardous situation has been averted, the additional braking force is withdrawn.
Distance warnings and autonomous braking can be activated and deactivated using the left-hand control panel on the multifunction steering wheel. For safety reasons, braking support in accordance with the driving situation is always active in the background.
In addition, the sensitivity of Brake Assist can be adjusted to one of three levels.
In “Early” mode, the settings for the intervention points are very sensitive. This setting offers the highest level of safety from the system. However, the intervention points may be considered disruptive in certain situations.
In “Medium” mode, the intervention points are programmed for maximum safety without disruptive interventions. This setting is selected automatically if the system was switched off during the previous journey.
Finally, in “Late” mode, the intervention points are programmed to be activated considerably later. In this mode, it is no longer possible for the system to provide the full extent of customer benefits. This setting is only recommended for an extremely sporty driving style.
